dampening off

dampening off

here is what dampening off looks like. It is a fungal disease that attacks seedlings. Seedlings need moisture, light and heat to grow and sprout the same three things that are also needed by fungi to grow and thrive. dampening off cannot to my knowledge be prevented, the only remedy is to pull the seedlings that have suffered from it and apply a fungicide to the soil.

so I’ve decided

So I’ve decided since I have my gardening blog, the seeded gardener (http://theseededgardener.wordpress.com/ ) and I have my international politics blog international politics for peace (http://internationalpolitics4peace.wordpress.com/) that I will use this blog for my riding posts and my experiences with my horse Danny. As well as my experiences around equines before I had Danny. I posted his picture on here earlier.

I am also going to post some of the helpful hints I’ve picked up along the way  and techniques I’ve used in helping my barn mates and my friends to be better riders. I’ll be posting videos here and on my facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/equitationgirl) from time to time.

Have a great Memorial Day everyone. I’ll be on the back of a good horse.

Hopefully you will too…

Anna

Danny

Danny

this is a photo of my horse Roome At The Toppe or Danny. He is a 15.3hh Thoroughbred gelding, born in 1988. He has been with me since 1995. He hates having his mane pulled and so I roach his mane every spring so that he doesn’t overheat in summer. He is a joker. He loves to try and eat my cellphone because it is red and looks like an apple. as well he loves to try and eat my camera which is not red. He also enjoys running around me in circles in imitation of his racing lineage, he is a grandson of Affirmed the last horse to win the Triple Crown. He is my best friend and makes me laugh all the time. When we were competing, he used to excel in the equitation classes especially the equitation over fences which means it was my position and riding skill that were judged rather than his way of going. hence my handle of equitationgirl. Follow me on twitter @equitationgirl.

texts for oklahoma

ok everyone. For those of you wanting to help the victims in Oklahoma, there is an easy way. some of you only need only consult your hearts, others consult your spouses. I want EVERYONE to SHARE this status because it is important. Your mobile phone providers have teamed up with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross to raise money for the storm victims. as you may know this is a text this to 12345 type deals. For those unfamiliar with how this works, you text the word to the number and it is a $10 charge added to your phone bill with the $10 being donated to either the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. That said, if you want to donate to the American Red Cross, please text “REDCROSS” to 90999. Make sure red cross is all one word. If you wish to donate to the Salvation Army, text “STORM” to 80888 . I know some of you will do both, some will do one or the other and some like me not being able to give will simply share this message. It may be long but Oklahoma needs our help and our prayers tonight. They have my prayers and this is me doing what I can to help. love you all.

oklahoma tragedy

Everyone please please please pray for the folks in Moore, Ok tonight. 20 sets of parents will not be able to hug their child tonight- 20 kids among the 51 dead. I encourage everyone please give blood if you are eligible. Go to the Red Cross blood banks they need your help. If you want to help, roll up your sleeves and friggin donate blood. your blood will regenerate, some drs says that donating blood purifies your blood because the new blood is purer….don’t ask me. Just sayin. I am a blood donor but I am not eligible again for another 3 months so please everyone. donate. do it now. take your kids along. even though you have to be an adult to donate, you can be as young as 16 with a parental note. take the kids along, show them that you don’t have to always give money, that you can give your blood and that doesn’t cost anything beyond the price of the gasoline to get there. Oh and the red cross uses Keebler products in their recovery section called a canteen, along with ocean spray juice. so your kids can see you do something good, and they can share a cookie with you afterwards. go to http://www.redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive near you. Your blood can save up to 3 lives and you didn’t pay a thing beyond what you normally would have. If you don’t save a life in OKlahoma, you can save the life of someone in your town or a neighboring city. Let’s save lives folks as many as we can. And to anyone in Oklahoma, as I know a good portion of the state also experiences tornadoes, you are in my prayers tonight.

the end result

the end result

this little one is about a month old. The reason it is not straight is because it is still too little to stake. Apple trees are notoriously slow growers. Be patient. When you start your seeds in the plastic bags, if you know the variety write it on the bag so you will know what type of trees you have. I’ve done a lot of apple seedlings now so my seeds are all mixed up. But hey I just did this to see what my results would be. Keep your soil moist and lots of light. the pot in this case is 2.5″ which will set nicely in a window sill as this one is, with a prescription pill bottle cap as a saucer.

next step

next step

the next step is to place the bags in a cool place. For me, I place them in an old nursey pot under my deck so these are the bags in their storage spot.
